Amazon Fashion: Reasons You Should Shop and How They Are Making Strides into Luxury Fashion

So like most of us, being home during this quarantine has caused my add to cart button to be hit one too many times; or five or fifteen. When outside was open, I would spent countless hours passing the time roaming the aisles of Homegoods. My new pastime has become scouring the internet for items I plan to wear once it’s safe to go back outside. My current e-commerce fixation is also so I don’t miss any of the endless deals being advertised by the minute to us all. However, my wallet is not so enthused with the countless sample and clearance sales so I had to find a medium here. My answer; Amazon. Not only can I purchase a new vegetable peeler or multipurpose cleaner; but the latest and now luxury fashions.

Amazon has definitely become a one stop shop over the past few years; ranking higher and higher on a fashionista’s list. I love that I can literally search for the most random item in the search bar, and several results surface for what I am looking for. And the best part is that it’s so affordable. Many times I’ve spotted dresses or shoes that I love on higher end designer sites but the price tag is a little too hefty for my liking. Well, Amazon comes to the rescue everytime with super fashionable and affordable finds that leave me not feeling too guilty for hitting that add to cart button just one more time! I for one have found some of my most unique pieces for myself and clients browsing their site. And the reaction from onlookers has always been where did you find that? They respond with a jaw drop and sort of friendly envy when I reply “Amazon girl!’

But now the e-commerce giant, once a bookstore, is taking on a new venture; luxury fashion. They have tried for years to be taken seriously as a contender for selling luxury retail but did not have much success. Could it be people only associate Amazon with convenience items and service?Clears throat- you need to jump on the bandwagon now as Amazon makes major strides towards the luxury industry. It started in 2006 with the acquisiton of Shopbop- who we know for several designer items. They recently aired their version of Project Runway called Making the Cut, hosted by supermodel Naomi Campbell. I mean that’s enough to sell me right there. Not to mention, Amazonfashion is growing at an alarming rate; with a space for influencers to have their own carts and pages.

Still not convinced? Did I forget to mention their latest collab with Vogue and the CFDA called Common Threads; Vogue x amazon Fashion; said to have been bought on by COVID-19. I mean its Vogue, “I die” in my Rachel Zoe voice. It’s their way to allow designers who have been directly impacted by Covid-19 to sell their product. Amazon offers their large and popular platform for exchange of a small commission. Some designers include Edie Parker, Tabitha Simmons, Derek Lam 10 and Chloe Gosselin. To me this seems like a very smart move. Not only does Amazon have the logistics on lock but the majority share of online sales these days. They have already acquired Wholefoods wth Amazon fresh, with this addition they are becoming the one stop shop for your Essentials.

Now are there kinks to work out, of course. The site doesn’t necessarily give a “lux” look and it was hard for me to find the very minute rectangular box that read Amazon by Vogue to even view the collection. But that’s not anything a creative director and ad space can’t fix. But I have no doubt Amazon will figure it out as they’ve done before. I personally love the fact that Amazon is offering a solution to many designers who have been affected financially from this pandemic. I also love that as a prime member it will come expeditiously; which speediness is not always associated with luxury retailers.

Sunnies from Amazon

So the moral and major point of the story is don’t sleep on Amazon for the latest and greatest fashions.I think it’s safe to say that Amazon’s mark in the fashion world will only get bigger. I feel like this is the new direction the retail world is going. Just a few months back I thought my eyes were deceiving me when I spotted Celine bags on Walmart’s site. No hoax there! With the effects of COVID-19 leaving many retailers shutting their doors or filing for bankruptcy, they just may be on to something. I mean can you imagine receiving your Amazon prime delivery of both toilet paper and a Edie Parker bag?

Of course there are still many designers and consumers who will not associate Amazon with luxury, and thus continue to purchase at what they deem more reputable sites for those items. However, I’m convinced, and will continue to patronize them for the latest fashions. Check out some of my latest purchases below and a few of my faves from the Common Threads collection. Let me know if you’ve been converted and I cant wait to see what goodies you find.

Amazon has come a long way. I remember the first item I purchased from Amazon back in 08 was a book for graduate school.
This post is very well written and full of detail…. I must admit that although it seems convenient to have luxury items delivered to my door …. there is nothing like the Experience of a boutique or Saks fifth avenue…..
I will say with Vogue backing it ….. it’s a huge WIN

Thanks for reading Kawana. Glad you enjoyed. and I agree it still is a great experience of walking into a brick and mortar to purchase luxury items. I’m just curious as to how this will pan out in the future!
