Fall is finally here, so you know what that means. Yes it means fabulous jackets and boots, rich textures and warm crisp autumn colors like hunter and merlot. But it also means its time for that annoying inconsistent weather where you have no idea how to dress when leaving your house in the morning. It’s 65 degrees in the morning and hits 85 by midday. This is why I love the idea of layering in the fall. It not only gives you the ability to change with the weather, but stretches your wardrobe by allowing you to experiment with your pieces in different ways. Here are some fun tips to master the art so you can layer up this fall.

Play with proportions

Layering doesn’t just have to be with jackets and outerwear. Try layering two tops or two dresses. I am a bit on the shorter side so I decided to layer two shirts. It just worked out because my shirt fits me more like a dress. When doing this think about length and fit. My black layer is more fitted so it’s perfect for layering because it wont be bulky underneath. It is also longer so I layered a more voluminous white top overtop to create some drama and balance. The day also turned out to be a bit hotter than expected so I could easily remove the white blouse and still have a complete outfit.

Texture is Key

In order to get the full effect of layering you have to mix up the textures and fabric. Don’t layer all cotton pieces or all silk pieces. Try not to layer two bulky or heavier pieces and just stick to one. If you want to layer a fur vest, maybe try a thin sweater or silky blouse underneath. It will create dimension and interest. If you layer two bulky pieces together you’ll be teetering the line of unflattery. If you want to transition your summer pieces try a summer dress with tights underneath and a chunky sweater belted overtop. This rule can apply to pretty much any article of clothing, no matter what you decide to layer. For example if you want to layer two coats, make sure one is thinner or lighter weight than the other, preferably two different textures. A tailored blazer under a faux fur jacket would be a fun statement.

Tell a Color Story

Because layering is already a skill that takes time to master, don’t overwhelm yourself and keep it simple. Try to stick to layering no more than one to two colors. Here, I decided on two colors; my basic color scheme is black and white. A monochromatic look is always sharp. Sticking to one color allows you to play around more with textures and proportions without the worry of a cohesive match between colors.

Have Fun

Layering can be a tricky skill but is something that everyone can do no matter your size. Don’t get discouraged if your first attempts are less than desirable. Practice creating and mixing different looks at home with your wardrobe at home. Taking pictures of your looks after is also a great idea. This will allow you to see exactly how it will look and make sure your overall look is not sloppy but polished. Stick to the some of my tips and I’m sure that layering this fall will be a breeze. So let the piling begin!

Very interesting! I’ve never thought to do this at all and it makes perfect sense?. I certainly have enough options in my closet. I’m going to try it and see how it works out for me. Stay tuned!
