Those who know me, know that I tend to dress up more than I dress down. Heels are a staple in my wardrobe, and usually my first choice when shopping or choosing my footwear for the day. I have only recently began to purchase sneakers and started to take on more casual looks since my lifestyle has shifted a lot. So with the influx of sporty and athleisure attire as a lewk, I wondered if I would venture over to the other side. I decided to switch up my regularly scheduled program and tune in to the sporty wave. This look is my take on the trend.
I was shopping in one of my favorite stores Zara when I spotted this striped polo dress, which is so not me. But with a price tag of less than $20 (Zara sale for the win), I decided to give it a try. I’m so glad I did. The polo dress is a classic and the stripes add an less than basic feel. I paired mine with patent platforms and a matching patent white saddle bag to add a more polished feel. The pearl earrings I chose also add a sense of fun elegance. If you’re not feeling the platform you could always opt for a modern chunky sneaker or barely there sandal (no stilettos) to keep the look modern. A classic sneaker could remind you of its hey dey circa Ralph Lauren 1990s, and make you look dated. Styling a polo dress is all about the accessories, as you are starting with a simple base. Drop a comment below if you own a polo shirt dress and how you style it.
Now the other sporty trend that has been undoubtedly popular these past seasons is athleisure; mainly biker/cycling shorts. I know you’ve seen these in various lengths and a wide range of colors from black to neon. Now it did take me a while to get into this trend. I thought am i going to look “dressed” wearing biker shorts. Are they too casual? Well a recent venture into Target for toiletries led me to the clothing aisle and a change of heart. I found this Wild Fable pair for a whopping $7 and decided I could give them a whirl. After wearing this style, I recommended snagging yourself a pair, or two or three. They are soooo comfortable and available in reasonable price points, some as low as $5. they are also very versatile as they can be worn casually or dressed up.
Now styling cycling shorts is all about proportions. Because they are a very fitted style, something cropped or oversize pairs well. If you want a more casual feel, pair with a crop top or cropped hoodie and sneakers. An oversized blazer or mens button down shirt are great options to lend a dressed up more polished feel. Here I show it casually and a little more dressed up. I added a orange blazer and fun printed heel to my base, which instantly dresses up the look. I could easily transition from day to night with the addition of two simple pieces.
Now this just goes to show that you can step out of your comfort zone and try new things. Just be sure to add your personal touch to exhibit your own individual style. I hope my styling tips helped you feel more comfortable with trying this trend.
